Grade II Listed Home - Cubert

‘The Old Vicarage’ is a Grade II Listed Building which lies in the centre of the village of Cubert, near Newquay on the north coast of mid-Cornwall. Full Planning and Listed Building Consent were granted in December 2012 to convert the existing outbuilding, former stable and coach house into an annex, alongside internal alterations within the house to improve living standards. The property changed hands in 2014 before work could begin on the alterations, and CSA Architects were appointed to develop new proposals and obtain a revised Planning and Listed Building Consent.

The new proposals were tailored to create a large family home for the new owners, but also to accommodate the recommendations of the Cornwall Archaeological Unit’s Historic Building Report. The internal alterations provide both practical and flexible living accommodation, developed to provide a stronger sense of the historic tri-partite layout of the original cottage, comprising kitchen, hall and parlour. This centre of the original home is restored, though one wall is marked only with a timber inset in the original slate flagstone floor, to allow better circulation between the kitchen and dining hall. Also key was preservation of the Victorian finishing, where feasible, including the retention of the Vicar’s ‘study corner’ alcove in the east bedroom.

The ‘Ellenglaze’ glazed fitted cupboard in the parlour is the only listed feature internally and was also carefully refurbished, and retained as an important feature within the home. Currently in use as a holiday cottage, the renovations and alterations have both enhanced and preserved ‘The Old Vicarage’ for future generations, in the heart of this Cornish village.

The project was shortlisted in the 2018 ‘Cornish Building Awards’ and ‘Best extension or alterations to an existing home’ in the LABC South West Building Excellence Awards 2018.
