We’re thrilled to share our feature in DRIFT, in an article entitled “In Response to Location”. The piece beautifully captures the philosophy behind our approach to architecture — creating buildings that respond sensitively to place, landscape and context.
The article focuses in particular on our Penlowen project on Restronguet Creek, highlighting how the steep, sloping site and its intimate waterside setting shaped every design decision. As DRIFT puts it, the house is “contemporary yet rooted in its surroundings” — a core aim for us. DRIFT Journal
Dan Meek, Director at CSA, shares that the design concept was born from the site itself:
“It’s impossible not to be inspired by such a beautiful place. The design concept was simply to respond to, and make the most of the location. By adopting this approach, the resulting building can be contemporary yet rooted in its surroundings.” DRIFT Journal
The article also acknowledges our careful balancing of design ambition and technical sensitivity: choosing materials appropriate to the Cornish environment, working with the landform to maximise light and views, and bringing in the landscape architect and key consultants from the earliest stages. We’re delighted to see our work in DRIFT, especially in a publication that celebrates architecture rooted in environment, place, and lifestyle. We hope this feature gives readers a deeper insight into how we think about design — not just as buildings, but as responses to the land, climate, and human use.
