csa were appointed to undertake a complete, holistic redevelopment proposal for the masterplan of a major, former mining site, located in Central Cornwall. This mixed use development is in a semi-rural location and consists of mixed use business space (an earth science cluster) renovation of existing former mining buildings, including a BREEAM "Excellent" conversion and extension of the existing gateway office block. In addition the site will be a centre of excellence to promote and showcase renewable energy technologies, housing hydro-power, biomass, a wind turbine, geothermal energy and Cornwall's first solar farm. The re-use of this former mining site will create sufficient finance to implement a major landscaping scheme to mitigate the impact of mining on the site and the surrounding countryside, retaining less than 15% of the site area to the new uses. Thi framework, working in conjunction with the client and Cornwall Council is due for adoption as supplementary planning guidance in December 2010.
