Eco House, Porthtowan

Set in a stunning cliff-top location, above the coastal village of Porthtowan, is thie eco house; a replacement of an outdated, 1950s bungalow. csa provided full architectural services, from conception through to completion for this large, low impact home. The exacting client brief included a desire to be entirely self-sufficient in terms of energy requirements. In design terms, the client and planning authority, wanted the building to be realtively traditional in appearance, using natural local materials, such as stone, slate roof and vertical emphasis windows. The building had to be robust to withstand the brutal weather conditions in this exposed location. This substantial replacement dwelling also houses the clients business and needed to have electrical capacity for all of their high tech, IT needs. The 4,000sqft dwelling is a super-insulated structure and incorporates ground source underfloor heating, solar thermal hot water system, solar photovoltaic roof panels (3kw) and a free-standing wind turbine (5Kw), which are connected to battery storage devices within the house and any excess is sold bck to the natonal grid on a green energy tariff.
