46 Apartments, Falmouth

csa were commissioned by Acorn Developments to produce a high density scheme of 46 "age-restricted" apartments on this controversial site adjacent to the entrance of Falmouth Docks. The site of the former Admiral Nelson public house and hotel, although not listed, required substantiation for demolition, as well as being within the Falmouth Conservation Area. To achieve the development brief, the scheme is 5 storeys high and incorporates undercroft car parking. A major feature of the design is a striking atrium which provides access to all of the apartments, as a shared communal space. Another feature of the design is the ceramic blue brickwork on the elevations combined with timber louvers, cladding and expressed balconies. The scheme also incorporates pitched slate roofs, demonstrating that contemproary architecture can utilise vernacular materials and forms.
