The house was in urgent need of modernisation and alterations to accommodate a modern family. The adjoining L - shaped outbuilding was most likely built at the same time as the house, but was in constant use as a farm store. We discretely in-filled the courtyard with a sympathetic lightweight glazed structure and utilised the outbuildings and courtyard area for living space. We proposed a new roof of a similar design with a glazed ridge. Aesthetically the ridge height is not any higher than the existing roof and introduces natural light, morning and evening sunshine into the living space, which was a critical element in our clients brief. The new porch helps articulate the main entrance. The proposed alterations and extension sympathetically enhances the property without causing any detrimental effects to the character of the existing building, one challenge was to retain the original bell call system which is comprehensive throughout the existing building, this was retained and has been restored in full working order, now forming a feature of the main living room.
