csa were commissioned to design a landmark building, in a prime waterfront location, between Queens Square and St. Mary Redcliffe Church in Bristol. A former glassworks, a fundamental part of the design brief is to provide a large multi-use public event space and also to respect the glorious listed church to the rear. csa produced a strking architectural design which created a visual funnel, drawing greater focus on the listed church. The main concept created two main blocks, flanking the main site boundaries, one of which projects into the water, on concrete piers, creating a stunning architectural feature, whilst allowing the pedestrian walkway to pass below, maintaining the uniterupted route along the waterfront. The focus of the development provided a large, open plan multi-use public event area, linking the main blocks, drawing inspiration from the former use of the site as a glassworks. Therefore, csa utilised this theme to create the impression of molten glass whilst cooling, also evoking the motion of the water, flowing through the site, using coloured glass. This will create a stunning attraction and landmark destination on Redcliffe Wharf, in the centre of Bristol.
